2019 ANNUAL APPEAL

Every day, all year long, HKC works to revitalize historic structures that give our community visible connections to its past and lends irreplaceable visual character to the streetscape. These places shape lives, and when they’re gone, they leave a void that can’t be filled. HKC is the only local non-profit organization whose primary purpose is to promote the preservation of historic buildings and landmarks in Kansas City as well as educate the community about the importance of historic preservation. If you value the restoration of old houses, the adaptive reuse of historic buildings, and the appreciation of historic neighborhoods, please consider supporting Historic Kansas City.

Our recent efforts include:

  1. HKC and our partners, the Westport Regional Business League and the City, led the effort to develop the Westport District Master Plan,. W winner of the 2019 MOAPA Planning Award. This plan has created property owner and public support for the adoption of a Special Character Overlay District along Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue, which would allow Westport to evolve in a way that is sensitive to the existing context and consistent with its historic character.

  2. HKC led the effort to establish a Special Character Overlay District in the “base of the bowl” for the Country Club Plaza. This protective zoning designation is a key part of the Revised Plaza Plan’s implementation recommendations and codifies height and land use recommendations. This is an enforceable zoning ordinance now that ensures that any future expansion, renovation, infill development or management operation in the historic part of the Plaza will continue in a quality manner, respectful of the design and unique historic character of one of Kansas City’s best known landmarks.

  3. Following the fire that damaged the former home of "Satchel" Paige, one of the most celebrated athletes in the history of American sports, HKC has received two grants from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to complete a structural assessment of the house and to stabilize and secure it.

From historic churches and commercial districts to landscapes and landmarks where our history was written, shared neighborhoods and places tell us where we come from and how we got to where we are today. The memories and stories of these places can only live on because of historic preservation and your support.
